Under normal driving conditions, replace transfer case fluid every 60,000 miles. Under severe 4WD driving conditions, perform this service more frequently.
Check lubricant level at transmission filler plug hole. It should be level with bottom of filler hole. Add lubricant as needed.
Remove filler plug. If fluid drains out or is level with opening, replace filler plug. If not, fill until fluid is level with filler plug opening.
CAUTION:
On Warner 1356 transfer cases with PTO, additional fluid is required. If proper procedures are not followed, transfer case or PTO failure could result.
Remove filler plug labeled FOR PTO FILL ONLY on front of case. If fluid drains out or is level with opening, replace filler plug. If not, fill until fluid is level with filler plug opening.
All models except "F" Series vehicles over 8500 lbs. GVW equipped with a diesel engine, use Mercon ATF (XT-2-QDX). "F" Series vehicles over 8500 lbs. GVW equipped with a diesel engine use Synthetic Mercon ATF (E6AZ-19582-B).
Use Motorcraft Mercon (XT-2-QDX).
Motorcraft Mercon (XT-2-QDX) should be used in transfer cases.
NOTE:
Capacities given are approximate. Correct fluid level should be determined by level at filler plug hole, rather than amount added.
